Why Use the Rockwell Kinetix 5X00 Series Drives

Every Engineer is looking for ways to get things done more efficiently. Machine startup and commissioning is frequently a time consuming part of the build process. One way for Engineers to improve on their startup times is to choose Rockwell Automation for their controllers, drives and motors.

The Rockwell Kinetix 5X00 series drives have advantages that become apparent in many stages of the design/build process. Here are some differentiators:

1. During the initial design stages, a wider range of inertia values is acceptable.
2. During commissioning, the drive setup and tuning is quicker than ever before.
3. During normal machine operation, the advanced tuning features can compensate for mechanical wear.
4. If a product changeover is required, the drives can easily adapt to the new loads.
5. A drive system that’s tuned well can reduce mechanical resonance and wear.

Additional features of the 5X00 Series Drives - Load Observer

Rockwell Automation’s 5X00 series drives includes a feature called the Load Observer. The Load Observer eliminates the need to auto-tune by automatically compensating for small and large loads that can vary over time. The use of Load Observer will provide higher performance than traditional auto-tune methods, and do so using less Engineering hours.

Load Observer works by estimating the load attached to the motor and adjusting that value at the drive update rate. The feedback system then uses this calculated value to allow the motor to perform as though it was unloaded. The result is higher machine performance under varying loads and changing conditions, with more tolerance for backlash and compliance in the servo system.

Additional Features of the 5X00 Series Drives - Tracking Notch Filter

Another feature included with the 5X00 series is a Tracking Notch filter. The drive identifies the primary high frequency resonance and sets a notch filter to counteract this resonance. The drive will continue to track the system response and modify the notch filter as necessary. In addition, the drive is able to monitor this resonance and make the control aware if the resonant frequency moves outside predefined limits.
